Reindeer Sleigh School – The Science of Animal Training
Go behind the scenes of our Reindeer Sleigh School and discover how young reindeer learn to become calm, confident partners for life alongside people.
This experience offers a unique opportunity to explore the science of animal learning through one of the Arctic's most remarkable animals. You'll meet our reindeer students, observe their training, and learn how modern, evidence-based training methods help build trust, cooperation, and good welfare.
At our farm, reindeer are trained using force-free, welfare-centred methods based on learning theory, positive reinforcement, and the animal's own motivation. Rather than focusing on obedience, we focus on communication, choice, and building a partnership between humans and animals.
During your visit, you'll meet reindeer of different ages and training stages. Depending on the season and the progress of our students, you may observe or take part in simple training exercises, feed the reindeer by hand, and learn how each individual develops into a confident working partner.
The programme also explores broader questions that interest every animal lover:
- How do animals learn?
- Why do emotions matter in training?
- What motivates an animal?
- Can the same learning principles be used with different species?
- What makes reindeer different from horses or dogs?
Although reindeer are our example species, the principles discussed apply widely to other animals, making this experience especially interesting for animal owners, trainers, students, professionals, and anyone curious about animal behaviour.
Your guide combines generations of practical reindeer herding with professional expertise in animal training and an academic background in behavioural sciences. The programme also draws on the guide's ongoing work writing a book on animal learning, training, welfare, and ethical animal tourism.
The experience includes time to meet and feed the reindeer, ask questions, and enjoy relaxed conversation in our warm traditional kota with hot blueberry juice and freshly baked cinnamon rolls.
Whether you share your life with animals or simply want to understand them better, this experience offers a fascinating glimpse into the science, ethics, and everyday practice of modern animal training.
